Impactful Healthcare Initiative
for South Asian Women
A project by The Nethersole School of Nursing at CUHK has reached out to more than 1,000 South Asian women in Hong Kong, promoting the purpose of cervical cancer screening and educating them on its critical role in detecting the city’s seventh most common cancer among females.
Since 2022, The Integrative Multicomponent Programme for Promoting South Asians’ Cancer Screening UpTake (IMPACT) has begun addressing language and cultural barriers that hindered the uptake of cervical screening within the ethnic minority. CU Medicine collaborated with more than 40 local non-governmental organisations and South Asian community centres to recruit 52 community health worker trainees, who became ambassadors for disseminating information about cervical cancer and screening services to the ethnic group, assisting them in making cervical cancer screening appointments, and accompanying them to these appointments.
In total, they engaged with 1,016 eligible women, resulting in a 75% increase in uptake within the community. The need for such initiatives is highlighted, particularly since 85% of the participants had never undergone cervical cancer screening.
As an exemplary showcase of community-academic-clinical partnerships in promoting public health, IMPACT is expected to have a ripple effect in reaching out to more South Asian women in Hong Kong.
Celebrating Our
Alumni Network
Maintaining a strong alumni network is vital to CU Medicine’s sustainable growth. The CU Medical Alumni Affairs Team achieves this by liaising with the CU Medic Buddy Group and the CUHK Medical Alumni Association.
In 2024, three exceptional alumni were recognised for their remarkable global achievement and humanitarian service at the “CUHK Distinguished Medical Alumni Award”, which has been bestowed on only 11 alumni. The presentation ceremony took place during the Gerald Choa Oration on 18 October.
The Gerald Choa Memorial Fund, established in honour of CU Medicine’s Founding Dean, awarded HK$2.6 million in scholarships to over 240 students. It also supported nearly 80 workshops that benefited over 3,000 medical students and alumni in 2024.
Other activities to facilitate a closer bond among alumni and current students include the O Camp Dinner, one-on-one mock interviews for Interns, and a Career Talk on Surgery.
The World’s Top Medical Schools
Converge on CU Medicine
Hosted by CU Medicine, the Transnational Educational Initiative (TEI) Summit for Future Leaders was held on 11-13 November 2024. Over 100 academics and students from 13 leading institutions participated in a vibrant platform for knowledge exchange and global engagement in healthcare education.
The 2024 edition marked the first time in the Summit’s history, which dates back to 2019, to welcome participants from non-member institutes of The Global Alliance of Medical Excellence (GAME). This move provided academics and students from Chinese Mainland and Macau with an invaluable opportunity to broaden their perspectives on interdisciplinary engagement.
With the theme “Inter-Cultural Co-Creation in Planetary Health, Healthcare Professional Education and Entrepreneurship”, the Summit invited global experts to shed light on the subject through keynote speeches and poster presentations. Insightful discussions on AI in medicine, and a visit to InnoCentres at the Hong Kong Science Park were arranged to furnish participants with a holistic view of innovative solutions in medical education, research and healthcare leadership.
The resounding success of the TEI Summit for Future Leaders showcased the participants’ commitment to fostering international collaboration and academic excellence, and our relentless effort for meaningful progress in healthcare education.
